Community Composting

Are you “keen to be green” but fed up with having to drive out to Deep Moor to recycle your garden waste? How would it be if Yarnscombe had its own facility to provide free compost?

In Bratton Fleming half a dozen volunteers are working with North Devon District Council to operate such a scheme. Funded by Devon County Council, NDDC supplied and maintains a large chipper and villagers take along their garden waste to be processed. The resulting compost can be taken away completely free, provided the organiser is told how much has been taken. The best part is that NDDC pays credits for every tonne used and the several thousand pounds so far raised have been ploughed back into worthwhile causes in the village. More details are available on Bratton Fleming’s website.

If enough people in Yarnscombe were interested we could approach Torridge District Council and see if they would be willing to help us with a similar scheme. There are many other community composting schemes running throughout Devon; an information booklet is available. If you think this could be worth pursuing, please read the booklet (warning: it’s 7MB in size so could take quite a while on a dial-up link; also, you will need Adobe® Reader® on your computer) and then contact the webmaster by e-mail.
