Ring and Ride

Torridge Community Transport Association operates a “Ring and Ride” service aimed particularly at people who have difficulties with public transport or who are rurally isolated. There is no means test and the service is not restricted to people on benefits or the elderly. You need to register by telephoning 01237 423232 (9.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. weekdays) and are asked to give two days’ notice. The service can then be used in two ways.

  1. A minibus (with taillift for wheelchairs) runs on alternate Mondays from Yarnscombe to your choice of destination in Barnstaple, including the supermarkets and Shopmobility Centre; the minibus will pick you up from your house around 9.30 a.m. and deliver you back home on return at lunch time. The fare is £3 return. Forthcoming journeys are 12, 26 October; 9, 23 November; 7, 21 December; 11, 25 January 2010; 8, 22 February; 8, 22 March.
  2. One of a group of voluntary car drivers can provide lifts to the doctor, hospital or anywhere else you wish. The fare is 40 pence per mile. Thus, a single journey from Yarnscombe to Umberleigh railway station would cost £1.60-£2.00. A single journey from Yarnscombe to North Devon District Hospital would cost £7-£8. Torridge Community Transport Association welcomes new volunteer drivers; telephone 01237 423232 if you would like to help.

Mobile Library

The Torrington Mobile Library visits Yarnscombe village hall every other Tuesday between 2.20 and 2.50 p.m. (It also calls at Clogshill Cross, 1.50 – 2.10 p.m.) Visit dates for 2010 are 12, 26 January; 9, 23 February; 9, 23 March; 6, 20 April; 4, 18 May; 1, 15, 29 June; 13, 27 July; 10, 24 August; 7, 21 September; 5, 19 October; 2, 16, 30 November; 14 December.
